The Adoption Procedure

To adopt an animal from the Hertford County Animal Shelter please visit the shelter on Saturdays between 9 am and noon or call (252) 358-7861 on weekdays for an appointment. The adoption process includes:

  1. completing an Adoption Application and Contract (please scroll below),
  2. participating in a pre-adoption screening to make sure that the match is a good fit for both your family and the pet,
  3. presenting your photo ID (adopters must be 21 years old or older), and
  4. paying the adoption fee of $90 for cats and kittens or $110 for dogs and puppies. This price includes spaying/neutering and vaccinations appropriate for the animal's age. (Please note that PAWS' adoption fees at PetSmart Adoption Events may be different from fees for direct-from-shelter adoptions.)

* PAWS of Hertford County reserves the right to decline any potential adopter based on established criteria, the interview with the adopter, observations or knowledge of the adopter, or a review of the formal Adoption Application and Contract.

Spay and Neuter Policy PAWS stresses the importance of spaying and neutering to reduce unwanted births, to stop animal overpopulation and to protect the health and safety of the public.  PAWS requires that all pets adopted from us must be spayed or neutered or the animal will be reclaimed.
